In many cases, even though you are the victim of a violent crime where you had no choice but to defend yourself and your family, you're not always presumed innocent.

Even if witnesses can corroborate your story, that doesn't mean you won't be facing serious criminal and/or very costly civil charges.

I have personally seen cases that were clearly self-defense where the victim was charged with First Degree Murder and sent to prison.

The risk of losing your freedom, family, income, savings, career, reputation, and the life you once had is far too great to NOT have some sort of protection in place.
